DERRY

St Columba Friary was established on October 4th 2009. The friars moved to the diocese at the request of Bishop Seamus Hegarty. The first location of the friary was in the Long Tower parish. The diocese generously offered the friars the use of the parochial house of that parish as their friary. While there, the friars a food bank, did home visits, covered the Masses at the Nazareth House chapel, ran prayer groups, a young adult group, bible studies and various other forms of evangelisation in the parish, diocese and around the country.

In 2014 the friars moved to Galliagh at the other end of the city. With the move the friars' work also shifted. They now work with youth, especially through being the chaplains of St. Brigid's College. They also work with Heal the Hurt, a life recovery program for those suffering from addiction. They run a monthly night of healing, a weekly bible study/prayer group called Living Disciples, a monthly all-night prayer vigil, as well as many other activities like covering Masses locally, giving spiritual direction, preaching and doing pro-life work.
